As of this past Saturday I am engaged.

Q: Who are you engaged to?
A:I am engaged to Bridgit Rutz, whom I have been dating for over a year.

Q: Is a wedding date set?
A: For some reason this is the first question that everyone asks. There is a tentative plan for December 2005. Most likely between Christmas and New Years. With Bridgit being a teacher we have summer or winter vacations as good options.

Q: How did it happen?
A: Bridgit and I went skiing and I “fell” and asked her to come over and give me a hand. I pulled the ring out and asked her to marry me. Then I pulled a bottle of Muscato 'd Asti out of my backpack which we drank sitting on a log in the woods.

Q: Was/Is there a ring?
A: Yes, an antique ring. Yellow gold band, with a white gold setting. One garnet with four diamonds.

Q: How can I contact you to send congratulations/money/free stuff?
A: I have a tentative wedding email set up wedding at tomcook.net

Q: What can I do to help?
A: You should email us so that we can assign you any duties you are fit for?

Q: Have any injuries taken place as a result of your engagement?
A: Actually, yes. Bridgit's parents are in BC skiing and we sent flowers telling them. Upon reading the news Barb, Bridgit's mother, threw her arms in the air, hitting John in the face and drawing blood.

Q: Will there be a wedding webpage?
A: As the time comes and more information becomes available a webpage will be put in place.

Q: Did she say yes?
Q: Do you think I would put this on my website if she said no?

iLife '05

So I got my copy of the new iLife yesterday. It's pretty cool. As with most any software there are cool new things, things that are missing, and things that I will never use.

iPhoto 5 is cool, it has more advanced tools to adjust photo balance and a more intuitive interface. It also creates softcover books as well as a variety of sizes now. Garageband 2 now has notation features but you can't print out the sheet music, which is lame. iDVD, which I have only used a couple times, now has more themes. I need to make more DVDs but I don't really have any video that I want to burn anyway. iMovie does HD video now, but who has a HD camcorder? Another program that I rarely use, I don't have a camera so why do I need to edit video.

Things I'm reading

So since I am graduated I get once again to read for fun, not because I am paying to. I just finished Father Joe, a graduation present from Bridgit. It was really good, and contained some good Catholic knowledge. I am already well into For Whom the Bell Tolls which despite being a Metallica Song is also a book by Hemmingway.I love reading Hemmingway. He is a manly man, and his books are about three things: getting laid, getting drunk, and shooting things. I have a hard time getting into his African hunting books, they are really boring to me, I have started two different ones and can't seem to get into them. For Whom the Bell Tolls is one of his war books, which are a bit more lively.

Wine Tonight

Tonight is the second Wine-O night. This round is Aussie Reds. It's going to be a great line up, so far we have two d'Arenberg Shiraz (Footbolt and The Dead Arm) and The Barossa Shiraz from Peter Lehman.

Click out more info to find out about Wine-O'sThis is the original Wine-o email:

“In Europe we thought of wine as something as healthy and normal as food
and also a great giver of happiness and well being and delight. Drinking
wine was not a snobbism nor a sign of sophistication nor a cult; it was as
natural as eating and to me as necessary.”

–A Moveable Feast
Ernest Hemmingway

So I've talked to a bunch of you about a “Wine Club” of sorts and am finally getting around to doing something about it. Wine is such a great thing to drink, but such a mysticism has been built up around it that buying a bottle can trigger a nervous breakdown, and bringing a bottle to a friends house is more likely an occasion for feeling embarressed than a generous gift. The greatest lesson I learned working at the wine shop wasn't which region makes the best wines (there isn't one), which grape makes the best wine (all of them), or even the best way to drink wine (with friends of course). It is that the only way to truly know if a wine is any good is to drink it.

So I propose this:

-Getting together every other month or so to taste wine and talk about it – totally casual, I'm sure there will be as much BS-ing as real tasting.

-Picking a category so that we can compare related wines.

-Every 2 people bring a bottle of wine that fits the category.

-Everyone has to learn a little something about the wine they bring so that we can all learn about it. Kinda like show-and-tell with al-ke-hall.

-I'm guessing that typically we'll be looking at wines that could cost a bit, but you get to split the price with a friend and you get to try a bunch of wines at that price- So, if 12 people come with 6 bottles of wine at $40/ bottle you've spent $20 to try $240 worth of wine!

So, how about at my place Friday November 19 at 8pm?

I think we should start off with the home turf- so how about California single grape red wines from a particular vineyard, county or district. If the bottle just says “California” or “Central Coast” or something like that then its not quite specific enough. If it says something like “Sonoma County”, “Santa Ynez Valley”, “Stag's Leap District”, “Simpson Vineyard” you're on the right track. The more specific generally the better. As for the grape look for Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petit Syrah, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sangiovese, et cetera. I think $20-$30+ is probably a good target, but feel free to go higher or lower if you think you've found
something special. And any good wine-monger can help you get the right thing.

E-mail me if you're interested and planning on coming, then “reply all” to the group which grape you get so that we don't end up with six bottles of Zin or something like that, variety will be the key to this tasting. Also e-mail me if you need a partner to buy your wine with, I'll get you hooked up with someone.

Dan

PS Good shops in town- Bella Vino on Plymouth, Village Corner on South University, Big Ten Party Store on Parker, Coleman's on Liberty near Stadium, Baxter's on Zeeb at I-94 and a bunch of others.

PPS I've already got a Zinfandel I'd like to share so, um… maybe don't pick that.

Crazy Weather

So today it's about 50 degrees F and going to end up in the 20's and teens the rest of the week. I'm not sure if I should leave the skis on my car or put the canoe on. Mother Nature is sure messing with us this winter. I have been able to get out XC-skiing a half dozen times this season already.

Scurvy Bastards ROCK!!!!!

We have moved to playing on Friday nights now (see schedule below). Apparently last session we ended up 4th out of 6 teams, which is good for us. This past week we had our first game of the new session, we won 6-3.
